SUMMARY:Sept. 17: Copake Iron Works Tours
DESCRIPTION:Join Friends of Taconic State Park for tours of the historic Copake Iron Works. Established in 1845 along Bash Bish Brook at the base of the Taconic Ridge\, the Copake Iron Works and 18 acres surrounding the area were listed on the State and National Register of Historic Sites in 2007. \nThe Copake Iron Works Historic District comprises all of the buildings in the Iron Works area\, the historic blast furnace\, three workers’ houses\, and the now-flooded ore pit\, as well as the previously National Register-listed Church of St. John in the Wilderness. Included in the tours will be a museum\, newly opened to the public\, where on display are a series of iron artifacts\, ranging from plow parts to chisels and unknown objects. Each item has been catalogued by members of the Historic Preservation Committee of Friends of Taconic State Park. \nIn its heyday\, a total of 5\,000 tons of iron ore were wheeled into Copake Falls each year from surrounding towns such as Pawling and Amenia. The walking tours include stops at up to 25 points of interest in the Copake Iron Works precinct\, where new\, informative signs interpret the legacy of this historic and culturally significant site. Free tours are given rain or shine\, beginning at 2:00 PM and concluding at 4:00 PM. \nFor information\, email Brian Boom at president@friendsoftsp.org or call 917-885-0691.

SUMMARY:Sept. 10: Hike the New South Taconic Trail Extension
DESCRIPTION:Join Friends of Taconic State Park for a strenuous\, but spectacular hike led by expert guide Claudia Farb on a significant\, newly opened 6.5-mile stretch of the South Taconic Trail. (See here for the particulars of this new trail section.) If you have hiked in the Taconic Mountains\, you will appreciate the importance of this new trail extension; if you have not yet experienced this mountain range\, please see here about the magnificence of this area from the NY/NJ Trail Conference’s description. \nOur hike’s southern trailhead is on Shagroy Road\, just north of Millerton\, New York\, which is where we will assemble at 10:00 AM. From there\, we will head north to the end of our hike at a small parking area on Quarry Hill Road\, at which we will have vehicles to return us back to our starting point where our own vehicles will be waiting. Pack a lunch\, water\, and snacks (but we will have some treats for the trail at the start to energize and sustain us) at this free\, beautiful and inspirational Hudson River Valley event. For more information and to reserve a spot\, email Brian Boom at president@friendsoftsp.org or call 917-885-0691.  Note: Hike includes steep ascents and descents and is not suitable for children.

SUMMARY:Aug. 18: Birds of Prey & Reptiles\, with a Robinson Wildlife Naturalist
DESCRIPTION:A naturalist from Robinson Wildlife will offer a series of free wildlife presentations at Taconic State Park in 2016\, on June 25\, July 23 and August 18\, featuring birds of prey\, and reptiles. Live raptors and and owl\, plus various reptiles. SUMMARY:April 23: Phenology Talk/Walk\, with Cary Institute’s Victoria Kelly
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: The talk will be in or immediately adjacent to the Taconic State Park\, Copake Falls\, NY\, where the walk will take place. Registrants will be emailed with precise talk location\, depending on group size.   \nEVER WONDER what determines when flowers bloom\, or leaves unfurl? When butterflies emerge from cocoons\, or peepers peep\, or when trees drop their leaves? Insights can be found in the science of phenology—often referred to as “nature’s clock” or “nature’s calendar”—a new and developing research area that’s proving a promising development for ecology. \nPhenology is the study of recurring life-cycle stages among plants and animals\, and of their timing and relationships with weather and climate—not just “trilliums opened today\,” but what else co-occurred with that event. \nJoin Victoria Kelly\, Environmental Monitoring Program Manager at the renown Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook\, New York\, for an introductory talk on telling time by nature’s clock\, followed by a guided walk to explore the interconnected lifecycles of plants and animals. \nVicky’s work establishing a Phenology Trail at Cary inspired Friends of Taconic State Park to make a trail in 2016 in the Park’s Copake Falls area\, in collaboration with Park Manager Chris Rickard. Along the trail with Vicky’s help\, we’ll learn to be keener and more objective observers of nature. \nPlus: Learn how becoming citizen scientists\, by recording and sharing observations of our own as individuals or as part of a group\, can help scientists understand a changing climate. \n1 PM talk and refreshments\, followed by phenology walk. This event is part of ongoing programming about our natural and cultural history by the Friends of Taconic State Park.
