Live raptors and and owl\, plus various reptiles. Each bird has its own unique adaptations for survival\, as do the reptiles\, and we discuss their importance in the balance of nature\, and with the birds\, how man has helped to restore endangered species such as the peregrine falcon. A flight demonstration is given with either a hawk or an owl; there is the opportunity (usually a favorite of young attendees) to hold some of the visiting snakes.

Registrants will be emailed with precise talk location\, depending on group size.   \nEVER WONDER what determines when flowers bloom\, or leaves unfurl? When butterflies emerge from cocoons\, or peepers peep\, or when trees drop their leaves? Insights can be found in the science of phenology—often referred to as “nature’s clock” or “nature’s calendar”—a new and developing research area that’s proving a promising development for ecology. \nPhenology is the study of recurring life-cycle stages among plants and animals\, and of their timing and relationships with weather and climate—not just “trilliums opened today\,” but what else co-occurred with that event. \nJoin Victoria Kelly\, Environmental Monitoring Program Manager at the renown Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook\, New York\, for an introductory talk on telling time by nature’s clock\, followed by a guided walk to explore the interconnected lifecycles of plants and animals. \nVicky’s work establishing a Phenology Trail at Cary inspired Friends of Taconic State Park to make a trail in 2016 in the Park’s Copake Falls area\, in collaboration with Park Manager Chris Rickard. Along the trail with Vicky’s help\, we’ll learn to be keener and more objective observers of nature. \nPlus: Learn how becoming citizen scientists\, by recording and sharing observations of our own as individuals or as part of a group\, can help scientists understand a changing climate. \n1 PM talk and refreshments\, followed by phenology walk. This event is part of ongoing programming about our natural and cultural history by the Friends of Taconic State Park.

DESCRIPTION: \nFriends of Taconic State Park will host a First Day Hike to Bash Bish Falls on Friday\, January 1\, 2016 beginning at 1pm. The event is part of a nationwide initiative launched by the organization America’s State Parks to encourage Americans to begin the New Year by rejuvenating and connecting with the outdoors. \nThe January 1st hike to Bash Bish Falls will follow the new “Iron Works Heritage Trail” created by the Friends group last spring\, when 25 interpretive signs were installed throughout the Copake Iron Works Historic District\, listed on the national and state registers. It is a family friendly hike of about four miles. \nAll ages are welcome\, as are well-mannered dogs on leashes. Young people are especially encouraged to attend.
