SUMMARY:Annual Meeting & BBQ Dinner July 20th at 6pm
DESCRIPTION:Renowned historian Kenneth Jackson headlines Friends of Taconic State Park’s 11th Annual Meeting and BBQ Supper on Saturday\, July 20th beginning at 6 pm at the Copake Iron Works National Heritage Area Site in the Hudson Valley\, 35 Valley View Road\, Copake Falls\, NY. \nAt the Friends’ annual meeting\, Professor Jackson will discuss “Robert Moses and the Rise of New York.” Moses is legendary for his role in creating the system of New York State parks and parkways that includes Taconic State Park. Jackson’s observations on this important figure in New York history\, about whom he has written extensively\, promise to make for a fascinating and lively evening. \nIn addition to his book “Robert Moses and the Modern City\,” Jackson is the acclaimed author of “Empire City: New York through the Centuries” and the epic “Encyclopedia of New York City\,” about which the New York Times said\, “no one with even a passing interest in New York will be able to live without it.” \nJackson is the recipient of numerous awards including the Alexander Hamilton Medal\, Columbia University’s highest honor.  He has been welcomed to Windsor Castle by Queen Elizabeth II\, to the White House by President William Jefferson Clinton\, and to the Governor’s Mansion in Albany by George Pataki. Nevertheless\, Professor Jackson says he is most at home in the subways\, back streets\, and gritty neighborhoods of New York City where he has been leading all-night bicycle rides\, three-hour walking tours\, and all-day bus trips for decades. \nTickets for the event\, including a barbecue supper prepared by popular pitmaster Ken Preusser\, are $20 and available at ftspbbq.eventbrite.com or by phone at 518-329-3251.

SUMMARY:Sept. 16: Iron Works Museum Tours
DESCRIPTION:Join Friends of Taconic State Park for tours of the historic Copake Iron Works. Established in 1845 along Bash Bish Brook at the base of the Taconic Ridge\, the Copake Iron Works and 18 acres surrounding the area were listed on the State and National Register of Historic Sites in 2007. \nThe Copake Iron Works Historic District comprises all of the buildings in the Iron Works area\, the historic blast furnace\, three workers’ houses\, and the now-flooded ore pit\, as well as the previously National Register-listed Church of St. John in the Wilderness. Included in the tours will be a museum\, where on display are a series of iron artifacts\, ranging from plow parts to chisels and unknown objects. Each item has been catalogued by members of the Historic Preservation Committee of Friends of Taconic State Park. \nIn its heyday\, a total of 5\,000 tons of iron ore were wheeled into Copake Falls each year from surrounding towns such as Pawling and Amenia. The walking tours include stops at up to 25 points of interest in the Copake Iron Works precinct\, where new\, informative signs interpret the legacy of this historic and culturally significant site. Free tours are given rain or shine\, beginning at 2:00 PM and concluding at 4:00 PM. \nFor information\, email Brian Boom at president@friendsoftsp.org.
