Expanded Iron Works Museum Opens

Our museum committee is hard at work preparing for the opening of the expanded Copake Iron Works museum, with tours on Memorial Day weekend, Saturday and Sunday May 23 and 24, 2015, from 2-4 PM (details at this link). Our hours coincide with those of the Roeliff Jansen Historical Society, so visitors can make it a history doubleheader in Copake Falls, New York.

Volunteer docents are needed; contact us if you’re interested.

On display will be a series of iron artifacts, ranging from plow parts to chisels and unknown objects. Each one has been catalogued by the local historical society. In its heyday, a total of 5,000 tons of iron ore were wheeled into Copake Falls each year from surrounding towns such as Pawling and Amenia.

Does anyone know the name of the colorful rocks that were in display at the museum? I can’t seem to remember!

If it’s the blue ones you’re talking about, they’re called slag! They’re the leftovers of the whole process.
